چکیده

PURPOSE To investigate the variation and symmetry of cone density distribution along the nasal and temporal retina of fellow eyes. METHODS An adaptive optics retinal camera (rtx1; Imagine Eyes) was used to obtain images of the parafoveal cone mosaic in 20 healthy subjects. Cone density was estimated at 250, 420, 760, and 1,300 μm eccentricity from the fovea along the nasal and temporal retina of both eyes in each subject. The coefficient of variation and the intraclass correlation coefficient were used to calculate the variation and absolute agreement of cone density between the same retinal eccentricity locations of fellow eyes, respectively. RESULTS A considerable variation of cone density between subjects was found at all eccentricities along the nasal and temporal retina (intersubject coefficient of variation ≥ 11%, P < 0.001). The intrasubject variation of cone density was, however, moderate (coefficient of variation ≤ 13% in 95% of the subjects); a high agreement was, on average, found between the cone density estimates at the same eccentricity along the nasal and temporal retina of fellow eyes (intraclass correlation coefficient ≥ 0.86, P < 0.001). CONCLUSION Cone density follows a symmetrical distribution between fellow eyes. A systematic distribution of parafoveal cones between fellow eyes may provide an anatomical basis for the involvement of the photoreceptor layer in the first step of binocular spatial sampling.

Cone-Photoreceptor Density in Adolescents With Type 1 Diabetes.

PURPOSE Changes to retinal structure and function occur in individuals with diabetes before the onset of diabetic retinopathy. It is still unclear if these changes initially affect vascular or neural retina, or if particular retinal areas are more susceptible than others. This paper examines the distribution of cone photoreceptor density in the retina of adolescents with type 1 diabetes. METH...

Quantitative Analysis of Cone Photoreceptor Distribution and Its Relationship with Axial Length, Age, and Early Age-Related Macular Degeneration

PURPOSE It has not been clarified whether early age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is associated with cone photoreceptor distribution. We used adaptive optics fundus camera to examine cone photoreceptors in the macular area of aged patients and quantitatively analyzed its relationship between the presence of early AMD and cone distribution. METHODS Sixty cases aged 50 or older were studie...

Comparing mfERGs with estimates of cone density from in vivo imaging of the photoreceptor mosaic using a modified Heidelberg retina tomograph

The spatial variation in central retinal function determined from mfERG was compared to co-localised measurements of cone density in two normal subjects. Individual cone cells in the parafoveal region of the retina were identified from 1 degrees x1 degrees images of the photoreceptor mosaic using a modified Heidelberg retina tomograph (HRT). The variation in cone density compared well with prev...

Eccentricity dependent changes of density, spacing and packing arrangement of parafoveal cones.

PURPOSE To investigate the distribution of cone density and spacing as well as the preferred packing arrangement of the cone mosaic as a function of retinal eccentricity. METHODS An adaptive optics retinal camera (rtx1, www.imagine-eyes.com) was used to obtain images of the parafoveal cone mosaic in nineteen healthy volunteers. Cone density and spacing were estimated for each subject (both ey...

Intrasession Repeatability and Interocular Symmetry of Foveal Avascular Zone and Retinal Vessel Density in OCT Angiography

Purpose To measure intrasession repeatability and interocular symmetry of the foveal avascular zone area (FAZA) and superficial retinal vessel density (SRVD) using AngioVue Analytics optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA). Methods Fifty healthy individuals were prospectively enrolled. OCTA scans (3 × 3 and 6 × 6 mm) were acquired twice in right and once in left eyes. FAZA (with and w...
